4 pelado
(Sp. model spelled same [peláðo] 'bald; poor,' perfective participle of pelar 'to pull out hair' < Latin pilare)Clark: 1840s. Among Anglos, a dishonest, unemployed, or contemptible Mexican. Referenced in the DRAE as a poor person or (in Mexico) a person belonging to the poorest and most uncultured classes, a boor. Santamaría also glosses it primarily as a poor person, but also a popular figure from the lower classes. He is a ragged, wretched, and uncultured person, but generally good-natured. It may also refer figuratively to an ill-mannered person who uses obscene language. Cobos indicates that in New Mexico and southern Colorado it means "broke or penniless."Alternate forms: palau, pelayo. -

Before the 1920s, when it became widely popular, son was mostly enjoyed by the lower classes and was once even banned for being immoral. A son group usually consists of the “tres” (a double-stringed guitar), bongos, “claves” or “palos” (a pair of sticks which are struck together to give a beat), a normal guitar, a bass guitar and voice, although there are many variations. Among the greatest exponents of son were Benny Moré (1919-63) and Arsenio Rodríguez (1911-72).* * *I m sound;al son de to the sound of;en son de broma jokingly;en son de paz in peaceII vb → ser* * *son nm1) : soundal son de la trompeta: at the sound of the trumpet2) : news, rumor3)en son de : as, in the manner of, by way ofen son de broma: as a jokeen son de paz: in peace -
7 cabron
(cabrón [kabrón] < Spanish cabro 'male goat' < Latin caprum 'male goat' plus the augmentative suffix -ón; literally, large (male) goat)Carlisle: 1930. A serious insult derived from Hispanic culture. It can refer to a cuckold or to an outlaw with no morals or principles. Spanish sources note that its principal meaning is 'male goat.' However, it has long been an insult as well. Originally, it referred to a man who allowed his wife to commit adultery. The DRAE notes that it can also refer to any coward who puts up with being the object of impertinence or mockery. In Mexico the insult has a broader meaning, and Santamaría indicates that it can mean ruffian, villain, rogue, rascal, loafer, wretch, or indecent person. No doubt a number of cowboys and cattlemen learned this term from the Mexicans they employed since it is an extremely common swearword among the lower classes in Mexico. -
8 molcajete
(Sp. model spelled same [molkaxéte] < Nahuatl molcáxitl or mul-cáxitl < molli 'stew or mole' and cáxitl 'earthenware bowl')A roundish, three-legged mortar used for grinding hot peppers and spices. The DRAE references it as a large stone or earthenware mortar with three short, strong feet, used for preparing salsas. Santamaría indicates that it is a small, three-legged mortar used by the lower classes to grind spices and chiles and to prepare salsas; it is even used occasionally as a serving dish for salsas. The instrument used with the molcajete for grinding is called a tejolote. Compare metate, mortero, mano. -

[pez] bleak2. [azar] chance;dejar algo al albur to leave sth to chance3. Méx, RDom [juego de palabras] pun;[doble sentido] double meaningALBURESAlbures are a distinctive form of punning which originated in the speech of the (male) lower-classes of Mexico City, but are now in much wider use. They are used in rapid-fire repartee, chiefly of a sexual nature, which can be stretched into extensive exchanges as each participant tries to top the last speaker's remark. They typically involve use of numerous synonyms for the sexual organs, and one frequent theme of albures is the attempt to insinuate that one's adversary is the passive partner in a homosexual act. Many of the puns have passed into everyday speech, and can cause unintended hilarity. For example, the apparently innocent word “setecientas” (seven hundred) can be understood to mean “you sit on it”. Non-native speakers, no matter how fluent their Spanish, are unlikely to make much sense of an exchange of albures, let alone be able to participate. Indeed, they can be largely incomprehensible even to many Mexicans.* * *m1 fate, chance2 ZO dace* * *albur nm1) : chance, risk -
